FAQs about the process for volunteers and requirements

About becoming a volunteer

As soon as there is a space for you, one of our friendly team will be in touch to book in a time for an informal interview. There are no right or wrong answers, we’re just trying to make sure that Re-engage is right for you.

If Re-engage is right for you, we’ll send you an email and ask you to start the checks process.

We have many volunteer roles, and some roles require more checks than others, but every Re-engage volunteer must provide one reference, have either an ID check or a DBS or PVG check, and complete the training relevant to their role.

About the call companion service

Call companions will be expected make 2-4 calls a month to their older person. These calls would normally last for about 30 minutes.  Ideally the call companion relationship will last for as long as needed, or until circumstances change for either the volunteer or older person. In those circumstances please contact us to discuss next steps.

You will be matched to an older person by the Re-engage support team. We will provide you with more information about the older person and help you to arrange your first call.

All new volunteers to our call companion service will need to complete an online ID check and we will request a character reference.

Process for existing volunteers

Yes, you can, please apply via the website to volunteer for the call companion service.

We're currently processing an unprecedented number of applications, but we will be in touch as soon as we possibly can.

When we set up the call companions service, it required a lot of processes, systems and training materials to be amended or produced. This has meant delays in getting our volunteers up and running and we appreciate your patience.

Yes, you can. Please apply via the website to volunteer for the call companion service. You will then be matched with a new older person outside of your tea party group.

Yes! Please check out our volunteer opportunities section on our website.

There are many other things you can also do to help us, either through giving us a shout out on social media, letting your friends and family know about our volunteering opportunities and referring older people using the referral form or even making a small donation to us.

Support for ID and reference checks

You will have recieved an email from us in the days after your telephone interview, confirming your success at that stage, and detailing the next steps in the application process. The link to start your ID check through the external company uCheck, is contained in that email.

We use third party provider uCheck to carry out our volunteer ID and DBS checks. uCheck is proud to be a registered Crown Commercial Service (CSS) provider. As a recognised Responsible Organisation and Registered Body, uCheck is accountable for upholding the DBS terms and conditions and meeting Government processing standards.

Cyber Essentials is a government backed Cyber Security certification that demonstrates uCheck's continual commitment to protect their customers from the threat of cyber-attack.

uCheck securely screen more than 600,000 applicants annually. Once you have completed your ID or DBS check, you can request that uCheck delete your information immediately so you have control of uCheck's retention of your personal data

For the ID check, you will need to provide details of one of following:

  • National Insurance Number
  • Passport
  • Driving licence
  • National Identity Card

uCheck offer a number of different checks including DBS, as well as the ID check. If your volunteer role requires an ID check, initially you will be required to enter personal information relevant to both ID and DBS checks.

Once you submit your information, we will confirm that you only require an ID check. This will result in unnecessary information being deleted entirely from the uCheck system, so that they are not holding any information unlawfully.

uCheck are best placed to help you with any sections of the ID check you are unclear about. You can use the chat or support functions on the uCheck website to connect with a uCheck team member, or give them a call on 0300 140 0022.

No, the only way to verify your identity is currently through uCheck.

uCheck will share your data securely with third parties in order to complete your ID check. Please refer to the uCheck Applicant Privacy Policy for full details of the process.
